We’re seeing people brew that way and have success. What do you attribute to the change in stigma? If you’re making beer, you’re homebrewing, right? So a lot of things to make the hobby more accessible means you buy less equipment and you can spend less time out of your day. Five years ago, you would look at something like an all-in-one system or a brew-in-a-bag setup as fake homebrewing. What has recently gone out of fashion in homebrewing?Ī lot of homebrewing has moved to streamline the brew-day process. This would’ve been great to know starting out because I bought tons of stuff that I ended up not needing. We have a paying member who has never made a beer before, but they wanted to get into the hobby and have been asking us questions about what equipment to buy. Some people have been brewing for a month. Some members have been brewing for 20 years. People will jump on you if you ask a silly question or something, if you don’t have much experience. We know that a lot of times, especially some of these communities on Facebook, they can get very in-group/out-group. We make a point to be as welcoming and inclusive as possible for people. We could see the difference and didn’t have to make six different batches of beer to see the impact of an ingredient. Then we sent each other our beers so that everyone could try them. We all brewed the same beer with the different concentrates. Yakima Valley Hops provided regular hop pellets, the concentrated Lupomax version-which is a concentrated hop product, but still in the pellet form-and then the Incognito, which is the liquid hop extract I mentioned earlier. For instance, we experimented last summer with different hop products. One of the great things about Brewtubers is we do a lot of beer shares and experiment series. You didn’t do anything wrong.” Do you exchange beers? It’ll leave this oily residue, but don’t worry about it. People said, “Make sure you warm it up and use the whirlpool. They sent the club a new liquid hop extract. We recently experimented with Yakima Valley Hops. What’s an example of a helpful information exchange? So, the big benefit to me is just to have that resource to ask questions, like “Does anyone have a good recipe?” “What kind of hops would you use in that?” Or, “There’s this new product-has anyone used it before? Can you give me some tips?” It’s just great to have a community with a niche hobby like homebrewing. They’d brew like a batch a year-not super active in the hobby. When I started homebrewing, I knew one other homebrewer who didn’t live near me at all. What are the benefits of a homebrewing club? The interview has been edited for length and clarity. We talked to Eric Cumming, Brewtubers’ Club Ambassador, about the value of a homebrewing community, new trends, and how the stigma of all-in-one systems is fading. The group meets once per month online, but it also maintains active communication on the social media app Discord. Groups such as Brewtubers, an online homebrewer club, allow members to exchange ideas and recipes and help each other out along their homebrewing journeys. Yet collaboration leads to knowledge sharing, and the camaraderie can help brewers save money, time, and heartache by avoiding big mistakes. Homebrewing is a lot of trial and error, especially for the inexperienced.

Kane, who also had short, curly black hair and huge eyes, had a gentle, feminine, high-pitched singing voice, which Margie Hines emulated when she lent her voice to Betty Boop in Dizzy Dishes. Kane was a popular singer in the 1920s whose signature song was "I Wanna Be Loved By You," in which she scat-sings non-words like "boop-boop-da-doo" and eventually earned the moniker "The Boop-Boop-A-Doop Girl." "One morning, Dave came over to my desk, handed me the music to the song 'Boop-Boop-A-Doop' by Helen Kane and asked me to design a girl character to go with it," Fleischer studios animator Grim Natwick told the Los Angeles Times in 1990. Though it was easy to draw comparisons between Betty Boop and Bow, the character was more directly inspired by another Roaring '20s performer. A-8 of the Hollywood on Parade series of short films that debuted in 1933, Bow's real-life husband, Rex Bell, tells Eddie Borden to stop hitting on a wax figure of his wife and say hello to a real-life version of Betty Boop played by Bonnie Poe, who also provided the voice for the character in film and on the radio between 19. Her short hair, short skirts and bubbly attitude helped keep the carefree decadence of the previous decade alive as the United States was in the midst of the Great Depression.Īs such, it has long been said that Clara Bow, one of the first Hollywood "It" Girls who embodied the spirit of the 1920s and the flapper lifestyle on the silver screen, inspired the character of Betty Boop. That could be because Betty Boop was really a product of the Roaring '20s. However, Betty Boop still resembled a woman, which was unique at a time when the majority of animated characters were based on animals. As such, she was made to sort of look like a canine with floppy ears and jowls. In a sense, figuring out who exactly is the real Betty Boop is a more complicated task than these early lighthearted animated shorts would suggest.īetty Boop was originally meant to be a love interest for the popular Fleischer Studios animated dog Bimbo. In fact, Betty Boop's identity has been connected to a few different women in show business in the 1920s. Fleischer Studios drew upon real-life inspiration when it created the character of Betty Boop in 1930. There's no doubt that Betty Boop has become an icon in her own right over the years, but she wasn't necessarily the originator of the qualities that made her famous. That's probably thanks in part to the sheer licensing power of the character, appearing on everything today, from clothing to car mats to cell phone cases to my personal favorite, a book titled " How to be a Betty: The Ultimate Guide to Unleashing Your Inner Boop!" The character has also occasionally popped up onscreen in recent years, making a cameo in 1988's Who Framed Roger Rabbit and having a new animated feature in development with Simon Cowell's Syco Entertainment and Animal Logic. 9, 1930 as part of Fleischer Studios' Talkartoons series. The tachymeter scale measures speed based on time travelled over a fixed distance, i.e. The dial carries a outer tachymeter scale and a black seconds scale divided into fifths of a second. The subsidiary dial at 3 counts elapsed minutes, up to 30, while the chronograph function is running and the subsidiary dial at 9 counts seconds irrespective of if the chronograph is running. The watch also carries the Moonphase in the lower half of the dial. The window to the left hand side by 10, indicates the day of the week and the window to the right hand side by 2, indicates the month of the year. The dial carries the classic triple date design, to which many watch houses adhere. In actual fact, it successfully conveys all this information very simply, once you become familiar with the layout. It may initially look quite complicated, but this is because it conveys a lot of information. It is beautifully symmetrical, well balanced and proportioned. The original silver-white guilloche dial contrasts wonderfully with the 18ct pink gold case and original pink gilt ‘dauphine’ hands and matching 1 – 12 Roman Numerals. Seven Functions:- 1) Chronograph accurate to 0.10 sec, 2) Day, 3) Date, 4) Month, 5) Quickset, 6) Moonphase, 7) Self-Winding Automatic movement. Given that many more expensive brands offering inferior chronograph movements charge far more for their hand wound chronographs with calendar and moonphase functions, this Zenith El-Primaro automatic in 18ct Pink Gold offers truly excellent great value for money. This is also a true ‘time capsule’ piece, by which we mean it has seen little to no real use and has been kept in mint condition. This is historic piece and one of the most fabulous calendar chronographs ever produced. This fabulous timepiece is one of the rarer 18ct Pink Gold cased examples. In 1991, Zenith introduced its first Triple Calendar, Moonphase, Chronograph by adding these functions to its self-winding El Primero Chronograph movement. Many see this as one of the best chronograph movements ever produced, as it can accurately measure time to 1/10th of a second and even today very few chronographs are capable of achieving this. It then continued to do this right up and until the year 2000 when Rolex finally began to make its own chronograph movements for the Daytona for the first time. This movement was a tour de force and so advanced that 20 years later in 1988, when Rolex required a more advanced movement to install in its Daytona Chronograph, it chose to fit the Zenith El Primero movement. Put simply, in 1969 Zenith produced the world’s first automatic chronograph, the El Primero. Zenith has also been recognised with more than 1500 awards and has over 50 individual movement designs to its name, making it the Swiss brand with the most awards for precision. Just a brief look inside the case-back of any chronograph is enough to demonstrate how complicated these watches are – making them very expensive to design and produce. The technical expertise and craftsmanship which went into these was watches immense. Notably, in 1929, Zenith won world renown at Kew Observatory (England), when a Zenith wristwatch won first prize for accuracy of better than 0.6 seconds per day.ĭuring the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s, Zenith held the lead in producing many of the most commercially successful and most advanced chronograph wristwatches. The company has an almost unparalleled record of technical achievements. 1865 and one of only a handful which still produces all its own mechanical movements today.
